OVERVIEW

Rooted in the belief that men experience the deepest transformation through authentic, Christ-centered relationships, the mission of Man in the Mirror is to engage young men around the world in meaningful relationships that change lives and build the kingdom of God. As a $4 million ministry, Man in the Mirror equips the church and connects men with one another for honest conversation, accountability, and spiritual growth. Their goal is to help every man reflect honestly, pursue Jesus wholeheartedly, and live vibrantly as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Due to the sale of their founder’s book, The Man in the Mirror, which sold over four million copies, Man in the Mirror (MIM) is known by those in the men's ministry world as a long-time leader in men's discipleship. They are now trying to build their ministry reputation beyond the work of one person to an organization that is leading the way in understanding, reaching, and discipling young men.  MIM is seeking a Vice President of Advancement who shall act as the leader and primary strategist for all development efforts including but not limited to partnership development, major, mid-level, digital, and recurring gifts as well as events. The successful candidate will have significant experience in donor relationships that yielded major gifts, as well as planned giving strategies to help advance MIM’s mission.

THEIR STORY

Man in the Mirror is a vibrant 40-year-old Christian ministry with a clear and compelling mission: to reach and disciple men so they can become the men God created them to be. The ministry was founded in 1986 by Patrick “Pat” Morley, a successful commercial real estate executive who felt called to something greater. It began in a very humble and unconventional way — a small weekly Bible study Morley started in a sports bar in Orlando, Florida. That modest gathering of men, hungry for honest conversation and practical biblical truth, marked the beginning of what would grow into a nationwide movement.

As the Bible study expanded, Morley captured the heart of what men were struggling with in his bestselling book, The Man in the Mirror: Solving the 24 Problems Men Face, published in 1989. The book’s tremendous success — eventually selling millions of copies — propelled the ministry forward and established Morley as a trusted voice for men’s spiritual growth. In 2000, Man in the Mirror reached a major milestone when it distributed more than one million books to churches across the nation on Father’s Day, one of the largest single-day Christian book distributions of its time.

Over the years, the ministry evolved from hosting large events to a more strategic focus on equipping local churches. The developed a training and book, No Man Left Behind, a proven model for men’s discipleship. In 2012, it launched a nationwide network of Area Directors — experienced leaders who coach pastors and help churches develop sustainable men’s discipleship ministries. Today, about 35 self-supported Area Directors serve communities across the United States. In 2016, the work expanded internationally with the launch of MIM Asia, which began as a grassroots effort and has now become a thriving ministry operating in seven countries across Southeast Asia.

Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Man in the Mirror entered a new season of focus. Recognizing the unique struggles of the next generation, the ministry renewed its efforts to reach young men who are actively trying to build meaningful, purposeful lives — a group they affectionately call “Builders.”

WHAT THEY DO

Today, Man in the Mirror operates with three clear pillars: Understand, Reach, and Disciple — all centered on helping men, especially young men, grow in their faith and build a meaningful life.

The ministry has established itself as a leading authority on young men by participating in significant research projects that explore their cultural challenges, daily pressures, and religious practices. Each year, it publishes the "State of Young Men in America Report," providing churches and leaders with timely, data-driven insights to help them connect more effectively with this generation.

In the area of Reach, Man in the Mirror intentionally goes where young men are. Digitally, the ministry anchors its efforts with a growing podcast and active social media presence, seeing steady increases in engagement each month. Their ambitious goal for 2026 is to achieve 100,000 meaningful interactions online. In local communities, they create welcoming spaces for connection through small gatherings and groups, aiming for 10,000 interactions through 50 active groups spread across the country.

At the heart of everything is discipleship. Man in the Mirror equips churches with proven tools and strategies — most notably the No Man Left Behind Model — to build intentional discipleship pathways for men. They help churches launch and sustain life-changing small groups and mentoring relationships specifically designed for Builders. Their measurable objectives include partnering with 200 churches that are intentionally focused on young men and directly engaging 2,500 Builders in meaningful discipleship opportunities.

Through this integrated approach of research, strategic outreach, and hands-on equipping, Man in the Mirror continues to pursue its vision that no man — especially no young man — will be left behind on his journey toward authentic faith and Christlike character.

OPPORTUNITIES & CHALLENGES

Opportunities

  1. Since Man in the Mirror is a well-established ministry known for leading men’s discipleship, a successful candidate will have the opportunity to share with donors who likely have some familiarity with the ministry or the work of the ministry.

  2. Work with a great team with extensive coverage of the United States with 30+ Area Directors supported by Regional Directors and a talented team in Orlando.

  3. The right leader will have the rare opportunity to curate their own development program and lead them to growth and greater effectiveness.

Challenges

  1. The organization has transitioned from the founder who continues to write books and run a separate ministry.  This included some transition of donors and board members; therefore, new donor acquisition will be critical towards growing the ministry.

  2. While Area and Regional Directors are responsible for raising their own financial support, the current system for incentivizing and rewarding the introduction of new donors could be strengthened to improve sustainability and expansion.
