MISSION

New York Families Foundation 501(c)(3) works alongside its sister advocacy organization, New York Families Action 501(c)(4). Combined budgets total approximately $670,000 ($550,000 Foundation / $120,000 Action) and equip and empower New Yorkers of faith to participate effectively in government. Founded in 1990, it is a Christian educational and engagement organization committed to advancing a culture that cherishes life, strengthens families, protects parental rights, and preserves religious liberty throughout New York State. The current staff is lean (two full-time in the Rochester office plus a part-time legislative chaplain).

THE NEED

The Executive Director is the chief executive and public leader of New York Families Foundation. In partnership with the Board of Directors, this individual provides spiritual, strategic, organizational, and financial leadership; builds and leads a high-performing team; expands the organization’s reach and resources; and serves as a credible, compelling voice for biblical principles in the public square. This is a senior leadership role for a mature Christian leader who views the work as a calling and thrives at the intersection of faith, public policy, fundraising, communications, and organizational leadership.

THEIR STORY

New York Families traces its roots to 1982, when Rev. Duane Motley and fellow believers in the Rochester area began praying about establishing a statewide Christian public policy organization. New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, now New York Families Action, was incorporated in 1983. New Yorker’s Family Research Foundation, now New York Families Foundation, was established in 1990 as the educational arm. Both organizations adopted their current public names in 2024.

For more than four decades, New York Families has helped Christians understand the issues facing their state and participate meaningfully in public life. Together, the organizations educate and engage supporters, build relationships with policymakers, and bring biblical convictions to conversations about legislation and government.

Known by supporters as their Christian voice in Albany, New York Families has a longstanding presence at the state Capitol and a loyal base of financial supporters. Its next leader will build on that foundation and introduce the ministry to more churches, families, and donors throughout the Empire State.

WHAT THEY DO

New York Families Foundation connects Christian faith with informed civic engagement. Its work includes the following:

  • Speaking in churches, conferences, and other venues across New York State.

  • Publishing weekly email updates and producing the Albany Update podcast.

  • Publishing commentary, op-eds, and press releases and engaging with news media.

  • Educating grassroots supporters on public policy and opportunities for civic participation.

  • Helping believers apply biblical principles to their responsibilities as citizens.

  • Building relationships with pastors, ministry leaders, allied organizations, and policymakers.

The Foundation’s work is rooted in the Gospel and in the conviction that lasting change requires both spiritual renewal and informed participation in government.

The Organization Today

New York Families enters this leadership transition with an established mission, a loyal base of supporters, and a clear need to expand its capacity.

The current team comprises two full-time staff members in the Rochester office and a part-time legislative chaplain. Staff retirements and other transitions have concentrated key responsibilities among a small number of people. Building a sustainable team will be a central priority for the next Executive Director.

The organization has also navigated a demanding period marked by legal challenges and leadership health concerns. These circumstances strained staff capacity and fundraising. The Board is seeking a leader who can strengthen operations, deepen donor relationships, and guide the ministry through a deliberate season of growth.

Financial support currently comes from individual donors, including a steady base of monthly supporters. Major expenses include personnel, postal communications, technology support, and travel.

The Board meets monthly via video conference and periodically in person. It provides governance, financial oversight, strategic guidance, and accountability, entrusting daily operations to the Executive Director.

The organization values Christian character, responsible stewardship, strong relationships, and a work environment that recognizes family responsibilities. Its next chapter will require clearer systems, additional staff, and sustained commitment to excellence.

OPPORTUNITIES & PRIORITIES

The next Executive Director will have the opportunity to build upon:

  • A longstanding ministry with a trusted voice in New York.

  • A loyal base of supporters committed to its mission.

  • An engaged Board that recognizes the need for growth.

  • A small organization’s ability to respond quickly to emerging needs.

  • Opportunities to deepen relationships with churches, pastors, donors, and ministry partners.

The most immediate priorities are to:

  • Increase revenue to support additional staff and a stronger statewide presence.

  • Deepen relationships with existing supporters and cultivate mid-level, major, and transformational donors.

  • Rebuild staff capacity and distribute responsibilities more effectively.

  • Strengthen organizational systems and planning.

  • Increase visibility among churches and the broader public.

Leadership believes that approximately doubling the combined budget would provide the resources needed to build an appropriate team and substantially expand the organizations’ reach. Achieving that growth will require a focused fundraising strategy, engagement with personal donors, and collaboration between the Executive Director and the Board.
