HISTORY OF THE ORGANIZATION

More than 60 years ago, five women heard Audrey Wetherell Johnson, a British-born former missionary to China, speak at their church in Southern California and asked her to lead them in a Bible study. Having for years taught people who had no Bible knowledge or had never heard the name of Jesus, Miss Johnson thought, "What have I come to?" After all, there was an abundance of churches in San Bernardino. But she prayed, and God gave her a clear answer. So, she agreed to teach but told them, "I will not spoon-feed you."

It soon became obvious that God had bigger plans for Miss Johnson and her Bible Study Fellowship. Her first class outgrew two homes before moving to a church to accommodate the new women who were attending. Billy Graham's 1958 crusade was the impetus for the fledgling organization to move to the San Francisco Bay area. As a follow-up to the crusade, Miss Johnson accepted the invitation to teach a class at Melrose Baptist Church in Oakland, Calif. New BSF classes sprang up across the Bay area. The Berkeley BSF class was the birthplace of the ministry's international expansion, as faculty members of the China Bible Seminary experienced BSF and requested the materials in order to start classes in Hong Kong.

In the early 1960s, the wife of a graduate student at the University of California asked if she could start a BSF class when she returned home to Indiana. Another class soon began in Arkansas. BSF continued to expand across the United States as class members changed jobs or moved, taking BSF with them. A class member's husband formed a men's group, and classes for preschool children grew from the desire to offer more than childcare for class members' children. The first young adults' class opened in the early 1970s.

By 1980, Miss Johnson had been writing BSF lessons and leading a blossoming ministry for more than 25 years. Her decision to retire led to a major move for the organization. Under the leadership of Rosemary Jensen, BSF's second director, BSF moved to San Antonio, Texas, where the headquarters is now located. The 1980s and 1990s saw BSF International expand into many countries around the world. More than 900 classes were in operation by the new millennium. It was during this season that classes for school-aged children began as well.

After nearly 20 years of leading BSF, Rosemary Jensen retired in 2000. Jean Nystrand succeeded her, faithfully serving from 2000 until 2009, helping the ever-growing organization face the unique challenges of 21st Century while maintaining a commitment to what made BSF unique and great faith in what God had in store for its future. Nystrand was followed by Susie Rowan, who served the organization for more than ten years of continuing change, growth and opportunities.

It is designed to be Bible study made accessible, as courses range from 1–6 weeks.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The current fiscal budget for Bible Study Fellowship is approximately $32 million. All funding comes via generous donors, many who have been impacted by the study of God's Word in BSF. They have not and do not fundraise or solicit funds.

Their main headquarters resides on a 278-acre campus in San Antonio, Texas, with an additional shared workspace in Dallas and an office in Belfast, Northern Ireland. BSF is led by Executive Director Hollie Roberts and her newly-reformed Executive Team made up of:

  • Ryan Douglas—Chief Operating Officer

  • Ramona Bishop—Chief Human Resources Officer

  • Laura James—Chief Legal Officer

  • Simon Lennox—Chief Product Officer

  • Brooke Sims—Chief Ministry Development Officer

  • Jamie Lawson—Chief Financial Officer

  • Tad Brockway (incoming)—Chief Information Officer

Many members of the Executive Team have been involved with BSF as volunteers and/or leaders for more than twenty years. There are currently 100 FTEs, 50% of whom are in San Antonio. The remainder are in Northern Ireland, London, India and 18 different states. Their 12-member Board of Directors operates with a policy-governance mindset. There are currently five Board committees: Policy, Executive Review & Support, Nominating, Audit, and Finance.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

Bible Study Fellowship provides one of the most well-known and enduring Bible studies available, not only in the U.S., but globally. The staff is deeply committed to the mission, and the organization enjoys tremendous volunteer commitment and loyalty.

The BSF culture is continuing to grow and deepen under the leadership of the new Executive Director, who has been in place since July 2021. The challenge before BSF is the transition of the ministry from the comfortable paradigms of the past, while remaining anchored to its core values as the ministry serves the new ways and places God is moving.  BSF recognizes that the world today is complex and it is strengthening the operational and ministry foundations to position the ministry for a strong global future.

The finance team plays a vital role in the operational foundations of the ministry and is in the process of reorganizing for maximum growth and development. BSF seeks a candidate who is committed to learning and growing, who will carry on the mission and vision of the ministry and who will seek after God’s own heart.  The Director of Finance will lead the finance team which consists of Controller, Staff Accountant, Administrative Assistant, Donor Care Leader, and International Finance. He or she will manage and oversee domestic and international finance activities of BSF and will be responsible for the safeguarding of financial policies as outlined by the CEO and CFO.

The ideal candidate will likely be currently serving a mid-size organization, has audit experience with a nonprofit and a results-oriented mentality. This person will need to love leading a team and providing support, encouragement and development opportunities for the finance team staff. The Director of Finance should have technical experience with good people and communication skills. He or she should be able to manage details, be proactive in reporting and passionate about this ministry. Terms like leader, financial acumen, manager, relational and analytical are words that describe this type of person.
