The Organization
Egbe Medical Mission (EMM), in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is a Christian ministry that supports ECWA Hospital Egbe in Nigeria. This exciting effort provides life-changing medical care to an under-resourced area in rural Nigeria in West Africa. Egbe Medical Mission empowers the work of ECWA Hospital Egbe, seeking to share the love of Christ by providing medical and training excellence in rural Nigeria, ensuring sustainability through healthcare, training, mentoring, and technology.
Since 2010, Egbe Medical Mission has expanded the ministry to a 50-acre, 99-building medical complex comprising ECWA Hospital Egbe and the ECWA College of Nursing Sciences. Seeing over 31,000 patients annually, and providing over 1,000 surgeries each year, the 120-bed hospital provides life-changing care through general practice medicine, emergency, ICU units, surgical units, labor and delivery, HIV/AIDS clinics, dental clinics, pediatrics, eye care, and more.
The Egbe Medical Mission operates from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with an annual operating budget of approximately $1.4 million. The new Director Development will join a team of five FTEs Stateside. They will need to relocate within a comfortable commuting distance of the home office in Ft. Lauderdale. They also support 20 Egbe employees in Nigeria, plus 100 tradesmen/construction workers, 229 hospital employees, and 81 employees at the ECWA College of Nursing.
The Opportunity
EMM seeks a new Director of Development to build on the strong foundation of generous donors developed over the last 15 years. The Director of Development will work in close partnership with the Founder, Don Campion, and the Executive Director, Michael Vines, to capitalize on the deep relationships established in the South Florida area and throughout the country. The Director will work alongside the team to develop a marketing strategy to support donor engagement, cultivate major donors, maintain current donors, acquire new donors, build a recurring donor database, and pursue a vibrant in-kind donor initiative. This leader will enjoy direct, personal engagement with all aspects of Development work and will lead collaboratively with the rest of the staff at Egbe Medical Mission.

THEIR STORY
In 2010, EMM’s founder, Don Campion, took a trip to visit the ECWA Hospital Egbe in Nigeria, where he was born and had grown up. In fact, Don’s father, Dr. George Campion, founded the ECWA hospital in 1952. When Don visited the campus, he saw the need for a significant revitalization of the aging facilities. The hospital was in disrepair and on the verge of permanent closure. Seeing a strategic opportunity, Don launched an initiative to revitalize the hospital in 2010. In 2022, the revitalization project was formalized as a 501(c)3 organization under the name “Egbe Medical Mission.” After 16 years of investment in the revitalization process, both the ECWA hospital and college are now widely sought after and highly respected for training and medical excellence throughout the country. They serve as a teaching facility, training medical professionals to serve throughout Africa, and are growing rapidly.
Working through the infrastructure of Don’s company, Banyan Air Service, EMM has been able to build and modernize the hospital and college facilities in Nigeria. This has dramatically increased the number of people receiving care and expanded service offerings to include surgical, emergency, ICU, ultrasound, x-ray, dental, eye care, physical therapy, and more.
In addition to the hospital revitalization, EMM has also achieved a significant spiritual impact. The ministry includes a chaplaincy training program, which has empowered believers to share the hope of the Gospel with nearby unreached people groups. This effort has brought both physical and spiritual transformation throughout the region.
The EMM Distinctive
Egbe Medical Mission works to scale and empower the medical and spiritual transformation underway in the Egbe community, Nigeria, through the ECWA Hospital, ECWA College of Nursing, and Chaplaincy training program. This unique organization works in close partnership with Banyan Air Service, a private company run by EMM’s founder, Don Campion. As a result, while the EMM team is small, the Director of Donor Development will work in partnership with Banyan Air Service’s communications, marketing, and hospitality teams.

WHAT THEY DO
Medical Care
The hospital in Nigeria is staffed by Jesus-followers who provide state-of-the-art medical care. The hospital serves a population of 200,000 residents in a 100-mile radius in this rural area of Kogi State. It’s 120 beds and five wards spread across the 50-acre, 99-building complex. There are currently three operating rooms, a new surgical center, a 24-hour emergency center and ICU, a maternity ward, a pediatric clinic, an HIV/AIDS center, an eye clinic, a physiotherapy unit, and a fully operational dental clinic. The hospital is currently implementing a $1m+ solar power infrastructure project to ensure consistent electrical power for its operations. Egbe Medical Mission has led and supported these major investments in the hospital's physical infrastructure and facilities through fundraising, recruitment, process re-engineering, leadership accountability, project management, equipment acquisition, information technology, and more. Egbe Medical Mission works to sustain and grow the impact of ECWA Hospital Egbe in Nigeria.
Training
The ECWA College of Nursing Sciences is a training facility that equips Nigerian nurses and midwives serving across Africa. Since 2018, the school has been revitalized and now has 450 nurses, nurse-midwives, and public health nurses. It boasts a 98% graduation rate and a prestigious reputation as a leader in nursing education in the country. Students are trained in holistic, Christ-honoring care. In addition to the College of Nursing, there is a Family Medicine Residency Program, which currently trains 5 – 6 resident physicians, and an internship program for hospital maintenance staff to build technical and leadership capacity.
Gospel Outreach
Guided by the motto “Christ Heals,” ECWA Hospital Egbe cares not only for the physical needs of patients but also for their spiritual needs. A team of chaplains provides counseling, Biblical teaching, and engages with the local community through outreach and pastoral oversight. The team regularly shares The Jesus Filmthrough public evangelism events. The Chapel of Blessing hosts weekly and Sunday evangelistic programs for staff, students, and relatives of patients at the hospital.

OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES
Opportunities:
EMM provides a unique missional opportunity to empower indigenous leaders through medicine and spiritual transformation. The network and relationships are in place to make a significant impact through targeted fundraising for medical facilities and equipment. This cause is quite popular in the business community because of the winsome, longstanding commitment of the founder, Don Campion.
With the historic relationship and proximity to Banyan Air Service (EMM offices at the same location), EMM has a potential donor pool of private plane owners who have already heard about EMM and are eager to learn more. The Director of Development will work closely with the Founder to build opportunities to share about the work in Egbe with Banyan Air Service's clients (in addition to broader fundraising efforts elsewhere).
The organization has entered a capital campaign for expansion, including the construction of a 1,700-panel solar farm, a new surgical center with male, female, and pediatric wards, and the construction of two additional operating rooms. These growth objectives present compelling opportunities for major donors, foundations, and in-kind giving strategies from medical facilities in the US.
Challenges:
While EMM has approximately 800 donors, it has historically benefited from and been dependent on one very significant donor and several foundations, which have enabled rapid growth and decisive project advancement but raise long-term sustainability concerns. The new Director of Development will work to deepen donor engagement among current donors and acquire new donors to join the flock.
Currently, donor responsibilities are scattered throughout the small team of staff members at EMM. As a result, there has not been a unified, central plan for organizational development across the organization. The new Director of Donor Development will work to centralize a plan that includes major donors, recurring donors, grants, and in-kind giving. They will also need to review the current development infrastructure, including the main database.
