WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION.

4africa is a nonprofit ministry that is committed to dramatically improving conditions in unstable areas of East Africa, specifically Uganda and South Sudan. Its mission is to exalt Jesus Christ by restoring and empowering African people to become good stewards of their community and country- imparting biblical principles through sustainable clean water and preventative health initiatives while educating future leaders, all with a heart for service. Their new Major Gifts Officer will deepen relationships with a portfolio of existing major donors, foundations and churches, dramatically broaden their reach into new donors and other major sources of funding, and work with leadership to build effective strategies for addressing future needs.

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

For followers of Jesus who want to make a lasting impact, 4africa brings real, local people together to empower vulnerable communities in Uganda and South Sudan. While many aid organizations focus on the quantity of the projects that they can count, 4africa invests in qualitythat counts for real people, using a proven system of empowerment that meets the needs of the whole person and the entire community. Their approach is built on four key focus areas designed to meet the physical and spiritual needs of underserved communities and equip local leaders for lasting change. They believe that God calls us to give more than just a hand-out, and to pray for more than mere survival. This is summed up in their tagline:

Local people. Empowering vulnerable communities. For life.

Launched out of a project of The Radler Foundation that began in 2007. 4africa became a public charity in 2017. Their headquarters is in Fort Worth, Texas, with a current (but rapidly expanding) staff of seven, plus a recently-opened office in Sydney, Australia (with one FTE) and more than 80 indigenous team members in South Sudan and Uganda, where Innocent Owani serves as Country Director. Their FY2021 budget is $2.6 million, with a funding breakdown of:

  • Major and Minor Gifts—16%

  • Foundations/Grants—51%

  • Strategic Funding Partners—23%

  • Churches (Institutional Gifts)—8%

  • Recurring Revenue and Other—2%

The organization has received the GuideStar Seal of Transparency and is Certified Transparent by Excellence in Giving.

Built around the values of intentional faith, unwavering purpose, expansive discipleship, impactful service, focused stewardship, lasting change, thoughtful accountability, and active excellence, 4africa is governed by a seven-member board of directors—professionals who are passionate and committed to the organization—and is led by Executive Director, Alex Radler; CFO, Gail Andrae-Pianta; International Programs Director, Michael Hornshaw (Australia); and new Vice President of Marketing & Communications, Sara Banks. Their most recent annual report can be found here.

HOW THEY ACCOMPLISH THEIR MISSION

4africa’s integrated approach has four focus areas—their Four Pillars of Empowerment—which form a proven system that delivers lasting results. As “agents4change,” these pillars not only keep their team focused on the mission, they also help their audience and supporters to quickly understand the “how” of what they do. In short, 4africa empowers the communities in which they work with 1) access to clean water, 2) training and resources to stay healthy, 3) development for local leaders, and 4) ongoing opportunities for Christian, spiritual growth. They describe their approach as being “an inch wide and a mile deep” and see their opportunities for the expansion of their work as being about depth, not breadth. Their goal is Africans solving African problems, which is the main reason why their staff in Africa is 100% indigenous.

4WATER

4africa believes everyone should have access to safe and clean water, no matter where they live, and that access to clean water has lasting ripple effects, resulting in healthier, more vibrant communities of people equipped to not just survive, but thrive. Through Christ-centered Water Access, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program, the organization constructs and repairs wells, hosts sanitation and hygiene trainings, and teaches communities to maintain wells for years to come. By making safe and clean water accessible, 4africa eliminates the burden of water scarcity, establishes deep and trusting relationships and practically lives out their faith as they share the Good News with those living in the communities we serve. To date, more 350,000 people have gained access to clean and safe water (and have tasted His living water) in Northern Uganda and South Sudan.

4HEALTH

4africa works to empower people to live healthier lives through hygiene and preventative health trainings. Their vision is to see healthy communities of people working to achieve their God-given potential so that they can experience fruitful and fulfilling lives. Teaching people about the importance of good sanitation and hygiene practices is just one of the ways they help improve the health of communities. They also teach people how to avoid malaria, prevent the spread of contagious diseases (like COVID-19 and HIV), manage menstrual health, and ensure safer pregnancies and deliveries. And they do it all in Jesus’ name. When survival becomes questionable, everything else becomes irrelevant. Jesus urged His disciples to tend His sheep while sharing the Gospel. As modern disciples, the team at 4africa answers the same call to care for those who have gone unseen, introducing Jesus by demonstrating His love through service and by educating and training on health and sanitation practices.

4LEADERSHIP

4africa longs to see East Africa transformed from the inside out by servant-hearted leaders who can bring positive and lasting change to their communities and countries. They believe that the local Church and today’s youth play integral roles in this transformation. They equip the local church to carry on with the work they began long after they’re gone, while also investing in tomorrow’s leaders through their 7-year intensive leadership program, which begins at the Leadership Academy of South Sudan (LASS). At the Leadership Academy, students are handpicked from the tops of their classes in secondary school, and the education they receive goes far beyond just academics. LASS equips each student to become one of tomorrow’s leaders by focusing on character development, discipleship, professional and entrepreneurial training, and more. By the time they graduate from university, students are ready to ignite movements as changemakers who will help their communities and countries thrive spiritually, socially and economically for generations to come.

ALL4GOD

4africa believes that there is no greater way to reveal the love of Jesus than by being His hands and feet among the people who need Him most, including both refugees in East Africa who’ve experienced significant trauma and the underserved communities supporting them. All of their programs serve as starting points for introducing the Gospel and making disciples for Christ. By elevating the local church and launching disciple-making movements alongside their water, health and leadership programs, 4africa can bring the healing hope of Jesus to those who need him most. They intentionally work in a region where the majority of the people have never heard the gospel. Their goal is for the hurting people of East Africa to encounter the One who has overcome the world so that they can experience the hope and peace of Jesus. To date, more than 22,000 unreached or unengaged people have heard the good news of Jesus Christ through the work of 4africa.

The WASH Program is typically played out in each village over a two-year period, while LASS is a comprehensive seven-year program beginning in 11th grade through college. To download a more detailed description and timeline of 4afrca’s programs, click here.
